Excerpt from Step Seven: At Home on the Trail
Tip 7.1 Good B & B Guests

• Remember that they are staying in a private home
• Leave their boots and muddy gaiters at the front door
• Take care not to break the knickknacks in their room
• Ask if they can safely leave clothing on the radiator when they leave for dinner (on the unlikely chance that the heat will come on while they’re out)
• Wash out the bathtub for the next guest
• Appear promptly for meals, especially for dinner if they’re having an evening meal at their B & B
• Tell the host how much they enjoy and appreciate the food and service
• Ask for what they want, instead of whining about what’s not offered
• Understand that things will not be the same as they are at home, or as pleasing as they might have been the previous night at “that lovely guest house”
• Are prepared to pay for their room in cash or traveler’s checks in local currency
• Notify a proprietor as soon as possible if they need to cancel or change a reservation
• Enthusiastically praise and fuss over the family dog—and the children and garden, too—but especially the dog
